Summer Blog 4: Landscaping Ideas

Now that we’ve covered the basics of cabin safety and log maintenance, we can get into some more fun topics. In this week’s post, I’ll share some simple landscaping ideas to make the exterior of your cabin feel just as much you as the inside.

Create a rock garden

If you’re anything like me, you can’t take a walk in nature without returning with a pocket full of rocks. If that sounds like you, you can start a rock garden! Choose a spot near the side of your cabin, mark it off with some bigger rocks, and now every time you return with rocks in your pockets, you have a designated place to put them! This is a no-maintenance way to add some pizzazz to your landscaping.

Choose native plants

If you want plants growing on your property, consider planting native plants, such as a native wildflower mix. This is a low-maintenance way to add flowers to your landscaping, as native plants are already adapted to the chaotic summer weather patterns, and don’t require constant care. You could also plant succulents, which also require less care and water than other types of plants.

Upcycle

Do you have any old metal buckets, boxes, or wheelbarrows lying around? Instead of leaving them out of sight to rust, you can repurpose them to use as planters or storage!

Lean into your surroundings

Let nature guide your landscaping choices, but be mindful of safety concerns. For example, if you’d like to have a picnic table in a shady area, choose to set it up under an already existing tree a few yards away from your cabin instead of planting a new tree directly next to your cabin.

Consider function and accessibility

If you plan to still be enjoying your cabin well into your golden years, it might be wise to landscape with that in mind. Instead of steep stone steps, consider a gently sloped walkway. Instead of a faraway driveway, consider having one closer to the entrance of your cabin.

Think about how you want to spend your time

What do you enjoy most when you’re at the cabin? Make your outdoor space work for you, not against you. If you enjoy roasting marshmallows, have a fire pit! If you love watching your kids run around and play, or if you yourself like lawn games, make that a priority! Your outdoor space should be a place where you enjoy spending time, and at the end of the day, how you spend your time is more important than having a perfectly aesthetic space.
